Uasin Gishu County is on course to achieve better care for cancer patients after rolling out the Equity in Cancer Care Project.

Health Services executive Joseph Lagat says there have been positive outcomes from the project, which is key in transforming health outcomes.

The project is supported by Sweden’s Region Östergötland, which has partnered with the county to enhance access to better care for cancer patients.

Officials from the county and the partners met in Eldoret to review progress made so far and chart new strategies to bridge gaps in cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

Lagat commended the partnership as a game-changer in the county’s health sector, noting that the collaboration had continued to inject new knowledge, innovation, and capacity-building opportunities into local cancer care initiatives.

He said since the project was rolled out, there are better outcomes as indicated in reports and records from all parts of the county.

“This partnership has opened doors for our teams to learn, exchange ideas and strengthen systems that support equitable cancer services,” Lagat said.

He said the county staff had been trained for better capacity to implement the project for the benefit of residents.

“We are seeing real progress, and together, we are moving closer to a future where every resident, regardless of background, can access quality cancer care,” Lagat said.

Promotive and Preventive Health chief officer Dr Paul Wangwe emphasised the importance of continuous learning and feedback.

He said such engagements ensure that counties remain aligned in tackling disparities in cancer care.

"Through the joint project, Uasin Gishu has been able to improve screening outreach, enhance diagnostic processes, and build stronger community awareness programs," Wangwe said.

Majority leader Julius Sang called for good policies to intensify cancer screening at community health outreaches, expanded training programmes for health workers and strengthened data systems to guide targeted interventions.

Lagat said as the Equity in Cancer Care Project enters its next phase, both partners  had committed their dedication to scaling up initiatives that promote prevention, early detection and equal access to lifesaving services.

He said the collaboration between Uasin Gishu county and Östergötland region stands as a beacon of what is possible when local and international partners unite with a shared mission in equitable cancer care for all.

Swedish officials have been in the county, helping to implement the cancer care programmes.
