Kericho County’s Agriculture CECM, Magarer Langat, has resigned one day before the County Assembly was set to begin hearings on an impeachment motion against him.
Magerer, who also oversaw Livestock, Fisheries, and Cooperatives, declined to appear before the select committee investigating the motion.
In a statement, he acknowledged the oversight role of the County Assembly under Article 185 of the Constitution but said he would not participate in what he described as a “compromised” process.
He cited a conflict of interest.
“This creates a situation where the same individuals act as accusers, investigators, and decision-makers, which raises concerns under Articles 47(1) & (2) and 50(1) & (2) of the Constitution regarding fair administrative action and the right to a fair hearing,” Magerer said.
He also raised concerns over the size of the committee, the time allowed to prepare his defence, and the lack of evidence provided to substantiate certain allegations.
Magerer noted that he had not been provided with sufficient time or supporting documents to respond to claims regarding actions taken before his appointment.
He said he could not, in good conscience, participate in a process he believes does not align with the principles of natural justice.
Magerer added that he will now focus on his family and PhD studies and plans to announce his future political intentions later in the year.
