Police in Eldoret have intercepted a lorry ferrying six bags of bhang valued at Sh9.5 million from Busia to Mombasa.

Uasin Gishu county police commander Benjamin Mwanthi said the narcotics were concealed beneath other parcels in an attempt to evade detection during routine inspections.

“Our officers at Baharini police station received intelligence from members of the public about the lorry transporting illegal cargo. When it arrived in Eldoret, we moved swiftly and seized the vehicle,” he said.

The driver was arrested and is expected to be charged in court.

The seizure comes less than a month after security teams in the same region impounded another lorry carrying 12 bags of bhang worth more than Sh23 million and arrested two suspects.

Mwanthi said traffickers were attempting to use Eldoret as a transit hub, but police had intensified patrols and surveillance along key highways.

“We will not allow such illegal business to thrive in this region. That is why we have officers manning the roads to ensure such activities are stopped,” he said, warning that drugs posed serious risks to society, particularly to young people.

The police commander revealed that officers would increasingly rely on sniffer dogs and advanced detection methods to uncover illicit cargo. He also cautioned transport operators against allowing their vehicles to be used in drug trafficking, noting that those implicated risked forfeiting their lorries to the state.

“The movement of bhang through Eldoret remains a major security concern, alongside the sale and consumption of illicit alcohol. These criminals are constantly changing tactics, but our officers are equally alert. If we had not acted on this intelligence, the bhang would have made it all the way to Mombasa disguised as parcels, endangering the lives of many,” Mwanthi said.

Police have reiterated their commitment to dismantle drug trafficking networks and assured the public of continued vigilance.
