Youth in Uasin Gishu county have been encouraged to embrace leadership opportunities to influence policies and decision-making that directly affect their lives.

County executive for youth affairs Lucy Ng’endo said young people, as the most vibrant segment of society, should not shy away from seeking elective or representative positions.

“The county is running several youth programmes, but because needs vary across communities, it would be better if young people themselves were in positions where they can directly advocate for laws that address those needs,” Ng’endo said during a youth forum in Eldoret on Wednesday.

She urged the youth to take an interest in understanding government policies and programmes, describing them as tools for empowerment.

The Uasin Gishu County Youth Policy, she noted, provides a framework for access to financing, training, job opportunities, and certification of apprenticeships.

Ng’endo added that under Governor Jonathan Bii’s leadership, initiatives such as the Governor’s Cup sports tournament, youth empowerment training, driving school sponsorships, youth-reserved tenders, and business loan facilities are being implemented to uplift young people.

“All these programmes are designed to empower youth and strengthen their participation in development,” she said, urging them to channel their energy and education into income-generating activities, especially in ICT.
