The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital  board has completed interviews for eight candidates who were shortlisted for the position of CEO.

Names of three individuals who scored highest in the interviews have been forwarded to Health CS Susan Nakhumicha.

The CS is expected to forward the names to President William Ruto who will appoint one of the three to replace Dr Wilson Aruasa whose tenure ended last month.

The new CEO will be gazetted in the next few days

Dr Aruasa had been at the helm of the hospital management for eight years.

The hospital board chaired by Sitoyo Lopokoiyit carried out the interviews in Eldoret for the eight candidates who were shortlisted from a list of 49 applicants.

"We are through with the interviews and have forwarded the three top names to the CS," said a member of the hospital board.

The eight who were interviewed include Dr Maurice Nyongesa, Dr Everlyne Nyamai, Dr Simon Kibias, Dr John Chumba and Titus Tarus.

Others who were interviewed are Dr Thomas Okwaro and Dr Evans Cheruiyot.

Also on the list of those interviewed by the board was current acting CEO of the hospital Dr Phillip Kirwa.

Lopokoiyit had on behalf of the board, last Monday, invited the eight for the interviews.

Earlier, top medics at the hospital, human rights crusaders and some members of the public had questioned the criteria used to shortlist the eight.

There were also claims of underhand dealings and unfair practices and lobbying for the position, amid fears that merit, and qualifications as per the hospital act and public service commission, may have be over looked.

A leading medic and human rights crusader Dr Magare Benjamin wrote to the board seeking information on the process which he claimed was shrouded in secrecy yet the law required that the process be open and transparent with the public fully informed on the recruitment process.

Dr Magare, in his letter dated February 20, says the position of CEO was advertised on December 12 last year and the closing date for applications was on January 16, 2024.

"The public has not been appraised on the process after closure of applications," Dr Magare said.

He said as a taxpayer and Kenyan, he deserved the right to be fully informed on the process along with all Kenyans.
