A farmer in Olgululu, Kajiado county is counting losses after wild animals invaded his farm and killed sheep and goats on Thursday evening.
The farmer, Lemomo Leposo said at least 100 sheep and goats were killed.
However, the Kenya Wildlife Service officials disputed the number and confirmed only 78 sheep and goats were killed while 23 were missing.
“Our rangers are in Olgulului trying to establish how the incident happened. We will reveal our findings after one day,” Kajiado South subcounty KWS boss Daniel Kosgey said.
Leposo lamented that the invasion has affected the only source of livelihood that his family depended on.
Kosgey also disputed claims that stray lions were behind the attack, saying a lion could have only sparked the attack.
“A lion can only attack its identified prey and eat after killing it. If it is not satisfied, it will go on to hunt and kill another,” Kosgey said.
Kosgey said his officers told him they found footmarks of a lion, many hyenas and cheetahs.
He said hyenas are known to kill as many sheep and goats because they have an enormous appetite for the stomachs of their prey.
The Olgulului/Olalarashi group ranch is within the Amboseli ecosystem at the Amboseli National Park.
Due to the ongoing drought, according to Kosgey, wild animals are straying out of the park in search of food and water.
Kosgey said his officers will investigate and establish the circumstances under which the goats and sheep were attacked to necessitate the processing of their compensation.
