A Kajiado teacher who was mauled by a hyena and escaped by biting its nose has been discharged from hospital.
He is filing for KWS compensation today.
John Matipei, 42, battled the animal with his bare hands or about an hour.
“It was a matter of life and death because I had no weapon,” Matipei said. "I kicked it but it did not let go. When I turned round, it landed on my chest and faced me directly. That is when I bit its nose,” he said from his hospital bed last month.
He was hospitalised for a month after the attack on Valentine's Day at a well at Maili 46 in Kajiado West subcounty.
The Emukutani Primary School teacher will go to the KWS office today to fill compensation forms. He will be accompanied by Kenya National Union of Teachers secretary for Kajiado Elly Korinko.
Matipei was attacked by a lone hyena when he went to fetch water for his goats after arriving from school in the evening.
The teacher suffered deep wounds all over his body. The hyena bit off a piece of flesh from his thigh near his private parts.
Matipei wants to get back to work. He is the deputy headteacher in the school with only two teachers.
“I have a lot of work to do in catching up with the syllabus,” Matipei said.
Kajiado County Referral Hospital health officer Dr Odhiambo Opiyo said Matipei has partially recovered and will return for regular check ups until full recovery.
Matipei's wife, Jacqueline, will accompany him to the KWS office.
the man to Kajiado town. She said she did not want to be reminded of the February 14 attack.
“It pains me because it was Valentine’s Day and I missed out big. My husband had been away at school for a week and I had prepared well for him only for that beast to spoil our plan,s” Jacqueline said.
