Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has announced plans to transform the cricket grounds at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Complex into a premier sports venue.
The transformation, Nyong'o said, would be done in partnership with Cricket Kenya.
The governor made the announcement after a meeting with top cricket officials led by CEO Ronald Bukusi and lawyer Pearlyne Omamo who serves as the Director of Women's Cricket.
"We are incredibly keen to forge a robust partnership with Cricket Kenya, with a primary objective of transforming the cricket ground at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Complex into a premier community sports venue," Nyong'o stated.
The transformation could be a major boost to cricket enthusiasts, especially in the Western Kenya region.
The governor described his meeting with the cricket officials as "highly productive" saying their discussions centered on avenues to collaborate and elevate sports in the county.
The revitalisation of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Complex, Nyong'o said, is central to his vision of promoting cricket and fostering sportsmanship among the youth and local clubs by providing them with top-tier facilities.
During the meeting, the governor commended Cricket Kenya for its initiative of training students that has already reached 25 schools across Kenya.
"It's inspiring to know that Cricket Kenya is already making significant strides, currently training students from over 25 schools across the county. Their ambition to target Kisumu as a major development center for budding cricketers from the Western and Nyanza regions aligns perfectly with our goals," he stated.
He added that the initiative will not only nurture local talent but significantly boost sports tourism.
"Such initiatives will not only nurture local talent but also strategically position Kisumu as sports destination hub for both local and international events, significantly boosting sports tourism in our region," he stated.
