In light of the tragic road accident that claimed nine lives this afternoon, Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o has called for urgent road safety reforms.
The accident in the Bangla area along Muhoroni-Kipsitet road also left several others critically injured.
Nyong’o has urged the Traffic Police to crack down on unqualified drivers and unroad-worthy vehicles.
"Today, we have lost nine people in a ghastly road accident that left several others badly injured in Muhoroni Subcounty, adding to the growing list of people killed on our roads across Kisumu and the rest of Kenya," Nyong’o said.
He highlighted that today's tragedy could have been avoided.
The governor also emphasized the need for the dualisation of major roads in this region, including the busy Busia-Nairobi Highway, to help reduce terrible accidents like this one that happened today.
In his plea to President William Ruto, he reiterated his early request for improved road infrastructure during the President’s recent visit in Kisumu.
"As I join the people of Kisumu in mourning the dead, I wish to repeat my request to President William Ruto when he visited Kisumu last week that major roads in this region should be dualised to help reduce terrible accidents like the one," the governor's statement reads in part.
The governor further thanked everyone who rescued the injured and medics who worked hard to help reduce the casualties.
"My condolences to families who lost loved ones, as we wish the injured quick recovery.".
