A mob on Monday killed an ex-convict after he was allegedly involved in robbery with violence in Kaditonge village, Kasipul constituency.

Steve Omondi, 35, is reported to have gone to the victim’s home, assaulted a female university student with a panga and robbed her of a smartphone.

North Kachien chief Jacob Adienge said Omondi allegedly waylaid the student when she was going for a short call on Sunday at 5am.

He reportedly waited for the student to get out of the latrine and pounced on her.

“The student was using the phone light to light the way to the latrine, which is some metres from their house. He pounced on her and got away with the smartphone,” Adienge said.

The student raised an alarm and her mother rushed out of the house to rescue her.

Omondi also allegedly attacked the student’s mother and chopped off one of her fingers.

The mother raised the alarm, attracting residents but Omondi fled.

Some residents started looking for him in the village.

They caught up with him on Monday evening and descended on him.

Adienge and police officers rushed to his rescue and took him to Rachuonyo South Subcounty Hospital in Oyugis town. He died on arrival.

“Omondi was bleeding profusely when we took him to hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival,” Adienge said.

Omondi was released last year from jail. He was convicted of assault cases.

“The man was taken to Kisii prison. He was released and served a probation sentence in an office, which he completed last year,” Adienge said.

The student has been admitted to a hospital in Oyugis town.

Adienge urged residents to avoid taking law into their hands.

The body was moved to Rachuonyo South Subcounty Hospital mortuary.
