Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) police in Trans Nzoia County John Otieno Opiyo has died in road accident that occurred in Ndhiwa constituency.
The incident occurred on Friday night after a car he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with a matatu at Miranga trading center along Rodi Kopany –Sori road.
According to a police report filed under O/B 36/15/09/2023, the commander was conducting his normal duties within his rural home when he met his untimely demise.
Eight other people who were injured in the matatu sustained injuries and were rushed to Ndhiwa Sub-county and Sori Lake Side Hospitals
The officer is said to have been driving home when he was involved in the accident.
Opiyo was moving towards Kalamindi trading centre towards Mirangai while the matatu was moving towards the opposite direction.
Ndhiwa Sub-County Police Commander Paul Rioba said the officer died on the spot.
“The accident happened after 8 pm when the officer was driving to his home. His home is near Miranga trading centre,” Rioba told the Star.
The matatu is reported to have moved from its lane as it was evading a pothole before hitting the private vehicle in a head-on collision.
However, further investigations are ongoing.
Opiyo's body was taken to Kirindo mortuary while the wreckages of the two vehicles were towed to Ndhiwa police station for inspection.
