Homa Bay taxpayers will enjoy a 15-day tax holiday as the county conducts a forensic audit of the revenue collection system.

Governor Gladys Wanga declared the suspension of revenue collection to pave way for the audit.

The aim of the audit is to ensure accountability and make sure all the revenue collected reaches the county government.

In a statement, Wanga said the suspension applies to markets, market user charges, offloading charges, transportation of quarry material and fees for impounded articles.

The governor said the move was informed by possible breaches in revenue collection, remittance and management.

“In July and August, the county government experienced a disturbing pattern pointing at possible breaches,” Wanga said.

“While several officers tasked with the responsibility of collecting revenue have remained faithful and diligent, some few unscrupulous ones seem to have perfected the art of deceit and unfaithfulness.”

She said this must be confronted by putting in place a foolproof system and bringing the culprits to book.

The governor appointed a 13-member team to audit the revenue collection and management system and propose solutions to the breaches.

The committee has 21 days to submit a report to the governor's office. It will be chaired by Pollycap Okombo, a financial specialist.

He will be assisted by former KRA commissioner Kennedy Onyango, Tobias K’ Onyango, another KRA employee, Eddie Malit, an ICT expert, Erick Okong’o and Nyando Mireji.

Other members are Caroline Oyier, Millicent Ogot, Caren Otieno, Patroba Oguma, Patrick Lumumba, Mary Nancy Opiyo and Alfred Onyango.
