Preparations are in top gear across Nyanza region for newly elected governors and their deputies to take over.
The governors include Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu), James Orengo (Siaya), Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) and Ochilo Ayacko (Migori).
The swearing-in ceremonies are set for Thursday this week.
In law, all newly elected governors are supposed to be sworn in 10 days after being declared winners by the IEBC.
The swearing-in is supposed to take place on the first Thursday after the lapse of the 10 days. The law stipulates that the oath or affirmation shall take place no earlier than 10am and no later than 2pm.
In Kisumu, preparations are ongoing at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, which will be the venue for the swearing in of Nyong’o.
The county secretary and chairperson, Assumption of Office of Governor Committee Godfrey Kigochi , in an advert in one of the locals dailies states that, “It is notified to the general public that pursuant to the assumption of office of Governor Act 2019, swearing in ceremony of both Governor Anyang Nyong’o and his deputy Mathews Owili on August 25”.
He had earlier told the media that even though there is no change of guard in Kisumu as Nyong’o was re-elected, they still have to follow the law on assumption of office.
In Siaya, co-chairperson of the transition committee Joseph Ogutu said the swearing-in ceremony will be held at Kenya Medical Training College grounds in Siaya town.
Forty-five counties elected their governors in the August 9 polls. Mombasa and Kakamega governor elections were postponed.
