Speaking in his campaign tour of Mombasa on Saturday, George Wajackoyah said he will sign an Executive Order to release the convicted bhang peddlers.
“When I am sworn in, I will release all those arrested and jailed over bhang possession and go with them to State House,” he said.
The Roots presidential candidate who is among the four cleared by the electoral commission has said he will legalise bhang if elected president.
Wajackoyah has trending since last week when he launched a manifesto advocating for the cultivation and sale of cannabis for export.
He also said his government will allow Kenyans to thrive in snake farming so as to export venom.
But the most hilarious pledge is his plea to Kenyans to hunt hyenas so as to export their testicles which he said can fetch up to Sh6 million per testicle.
However, the Union of Veterinary Practitioners of Kenya has rejected the proposal to allow Kenya to trade in snakes and hyenas testicles, calling it “unrealistic and impractical".
“The Union of Veterinary Practitioners of Kenya is perturbed at the level of political talk that is likely to cause harm to animals," the group said in a statement.
"Prof Wajakoyah’s assertion that it is possible for Kenyans to trade in Wildlife and Wildlife products is quite worrying and impractical.”
The union's secretary-general Miheso Mulembani said the two species may diminish if their products are traded due to their low population in the country.
Mulembani said products from animals may lead to the spread and break out of dangerous diseases like viruses and bacteria that may affect human beings.
“Wajakoyah’s proposal to trade in snakes and hyena testicles is a recipe for another pandemic owing to the spill of viruses, bacteria and parasites from hyenas and snakes in the wild to human beings,” the union said.
Mulembani further said Wajackoyah’s plan will be a violation of charter Kenya signed under the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife.
Agano party presidential candidate Mwaure Waihiga said the Roots Party presidential candidate has turned the presidential campaign into a criminal enterprise.
"It is not acceptable that he encourages drug trafficking, the planting of bhang in public places and suspending of the constitution, ” Mwaure said.
