An inmate was found dead inside Nyatieko police station cell in Kisii, on Monday.

The body of the deceased, David Ondaro Nyamweya, had a belt tied round its neck.

Kisii County Police County Commander Francis Kooli said the suspect had been locked up for theft of a motorcycle.

"He was due to be taken to court today (Monday) over the same before he committed suicide,"Kooli told the Star.

Separately, officers at Igonga station in Bonchari in Kisii South have been accused of holding suspects beyond the stipulated time frame ahead of court appearances.

At least three suspects arrested last week Wednesday spent three nights in custody without any charges preferred on them.

An assistant chief from the area is said to have instigated the suspects' arrests over voter transfers.

By Saturday, the suspects-a woman and two men-had not been briefed of their charges, prompting Riana Ward Rep Vincent Moisabi to send them a lawyer who secured their release on a free bond.

Moisabi accused the station officers of detaining suspects illegally and without trial on flimsy grounds.

County Police boss Francis Kooli said a probe has begun into matter.

"I have instructed a probe into the matter and will brief you on the outcome soon," he told the Star on the phone.
