The Transition Authority is lobbying the National Assembly to support a bill seeking to extend TA’s term, chairman Kinuthia Wamwangi has said.
The Senate Legal Affairs committee proposed prolonging the term, set to lapse on March 4, for “not more than three years”.
In the proposed Constitution Amendment Bill, the committee chaired by Busia Senator Amos Wako said TA needs time to complete its transition work.
Speaking to the Star on the phone yesterday, Wamwangi said TA is “happy with what the Senate has done”.
“We hope our leaders in the National Assembly will also support us,” he said.
“We are in talks with MPs. We still have some work pending to ensure smooth transfer of functions to counties.”
Devolution CS Mwangi Kiunjuri proposed a one-year extension, saying the authority has only done “65 per cent of its work”.
“I am convinced, based on the report on the workload, that there is need for such an extension,” he said.
Kiunjuri promised to meet the Senate and the National Assembly to convince them to extend the authority’s term.
However, the Council of Governors opposes extension, saying it aims to undermine devolution.
“Extending the term by even a single day is a tactic by the executive to delay transfer of core functions to the counties,” CoG chair Peter Munya said.
