Wajir county is a step closer to establishing its first-ever fully fledged university following a high-level consultative meeting.
The meeting convened by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba brought together Eldas MP Adan Keynan, Wajir West MP Yussuf Farah, and members of the board of trustees of the proposed Wajir Peace University.
Speaking after the meeting, MP Keynan reaffirmed the leaders’ collective commitment to fast-track the institution’s establishment, noting its transformative potential for the region.
According to Keinan, the university will equip students from the vast Northern region with the skills, exposure, and competencies needed to compete both nationally and globally.
He emphasised that the long-awaited university would serve as a hub for peacebuilding, research and innovation, while also strengthening technical and professional capacity across Northern Kenya.
“The plan to have a fully fledged university in Wajir will equip students in the vast region with the skills, requisite competencies and exposure required to compete nationally and globally,” Keynan said.
Beyond academics, the university is envisioned to nurture a new generation of peace practitioners, engineers, researchers, educators and innovators—young people empowered to drive development, create solutions and transform the socio-economic landscape of the region.
Wajir West MP expressed the overwhelming community support and the unified stance of Wajir leaders, regional representatives, and pastoralist communities who he noted view the institution as a long-overdue investment in education and stability.
The leaders expressed optimism that the collaborative momentum would accelerate the realization of Wajir Peace University, marking a historic milestone for Northern Kenya.
CS Ogamba noted that the government was committed to exploring opportunities to expand access to higher learning and enhance education quality across the country.
If realised, Wajir Peace University will not only expand higher education access but also serve as a hub for research, conflict resolution, and innovation, areas critical to the region’s long-term stability and progress.
