Lagdera MP Abdikadir Hussein on Sunday expressed concern that some health facilities in Garissa county were still charging patients for outpatient services, despite a government directive for free treatment.
Speaking in Balambala town during the closure of a three-day free medical and surgical camp, Hussein noted that the directive was not being fully observed.
The camp was organised by the county government in partnership with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders.
Last week, President William Ruto warned public health facilities that continue to charge for outpatient services, emphasising that these services are fully funded by the government and should be offered at no cost.
Hussein urged Health CS Aden Duale to ensure adherence to the directive.
“Our people are still being charged when seeking treatment. My plea is that the law and government directive be respected to prevent unnecessary suffering,” he said.
The MP also highlighted the need for improved network connectivity across the North Eastern region to support access to healthcare services under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
He noted that poor connectivity in remote areas was delaying verification under SHIF, affecting service delivery and especially impacting elderly patients, expectant mothers, and critically ill patients.
Hussein warned that if connectivity challenges are not addressed, the rollout of universal healthcare coverage through SHIF could be undermined in marginalised areas.
During the event, Hussein, elected on an ODM ticket, stated he supports President Ruto’s re-election, noting residents’ desire for effective service delivery.
His remarks were echoed by ODM nominated MP Umulkheir Harun, who said the party was aligning with its leader’s stance.
