Jama emphasised the importance of teamwork and asked the new appointees to work towards transforming the municipality into a proper urban setup.

“Work as a team for the good of the people of Masalani and address the challenges facing the residents including garbage collection, roads and drainage,” he said.

The board members are Mohamed Hajir Sheikh (chairman), Leilah Ahmed Abdullahi (vice chairperson) and members Ismail Duale Korio, Hussein Abdullahi Gedi, Aden Ali Abdi, Dayib Yare Bashir and Maryam Mohamud Mohamed.

Jama said the municipality will benefit from funding from the county, the Kenya Urban Support Programme, the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project and the Kenya Urban Development Support Programme to improve infrastructure.

Chairman Hajir promised efficient service delivery to residents.

“I want to give an assurance that as a board we will strive to do our best to make the dream of growing Masalani a reality. Our people are looking up to us to make this happen. And we must deliver,” he said.

The upgrade is expected to attract investors and residents will enjoy more development in infrastructure, agriculture, drainage, education and other social amenities.

According to the Urban Areas and Cities Act, 2011, a municipality must have a population of 70,000 to 249,000.

It should also have an integrated development plan and demonstrable capacity to generate sufficient revenue to sustain its operations.

It should have sufficient space for expansion, as well as the capacity to effectively deliver essential services to residents.
