Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu has raised the alarm over increasing cases of rape and defilement.

The MP said it was becoming difficult to help victims because most cases were not reported. “Rape cases are doubling each day. It is worrying because the majority of the perpetrators are fathers,” Kasalu said.

She spoke at Kasina Primary School where she distributed free government sanitary towels to girls in Standard Six to Eight.

More than 500,000 schoolgirls have received the pads, Kasalu said.

“It is time we stopped retrogressive cultural practices that hinder the growth of our children,” Kasalu said. She asked chiefs to arrest all suspected defilers.
