The Kenya Union of Public Relations and Communications Professionals (KUPRECOMP) has encouraged communication practitioners across the country to actively pursue political leadership positions, assuring them of the Union's full support as they seek elective office in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking to the media, KUPRECOMP Secretary General Gilbert Awino said the Union is committed to supporting its members who choose to vie for various political positions at both county and national levels.
"Today, we want to state that 2027 is fast approaching, and many Kenyans will be presenting themselves for various political positions across the country. Over the years, a number of our members have participated in elections, with some succeeding and others not,” he said.
“As a union, we are telling our members that we shall support them regardless of their political party affiliations. Our core mandate is to ensure our members receive the necessary support as they pursue their political aspirations.”
Political representation is a constitutional right, and no one should be denied the opportunity to participate, Awino said.
He said KUPRECOMP will remain politically neutral and will not endorse any political party or candidate, but will instead focus on safeguarding the interests and welfare of communication professionals.
"As a union, we shall protect our members wherever they are called upon to discharge their duties. Communicators play a critical role in the dissemination of information, and we must ensure they are protected from any form of violence, intimidation, or abuse," the secretary general added.
Call for Peace and Political Tolerance
At the same time, KUPRECOMP chairman Mike Wao urged political leaders and their supporters to embrace tolerance and peaceful engagement as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
Wao warned against inflammatory political rhetoric that could undermine national cohesion and stability.
"We have witnessed instances of political intolerance, and I want to urge the political class to exercise caution and restraint in their public utterances. Leaders must avoid statements that could plunge the country into unnecessary tension and instability,” he said.
“As communicators, we shall continue to exercise our rights
as guaranteed under Article 34 of the Constitution, but we will not allow
ourselves to be used as tools for spreading animosity or division.”
