As Kenya prepares to mark its National Environment Day, residents of Runda in Karura Ward, Nairobi County, have staged a peaceful protest against plans to construct residential buildings on a public parcel of land within their neighbourhood.

The residents claim that a private developer is attempting to seize an eight-acre plot that had been designated as a community park and children’s playground.

The residents expressed outrage that the land meant for public use was now being repurposed for high-rise apartments — a move they say violates local zoning laws and environmental regulations.

“It’s time we told the government that this is unacceptable. We have by-laws — no bars, no nightclubs in Runda — but suddenly we are going to have all of them,” said Chris Getonga, chairman of the Runda Residents Association.

“Our security will be threatened. I appeal to all residents, beyond protesting, to reach out to their leaders and stop this impunity. Somebody approved this, and we must know who it was,” he added.

“The question I ask all of you is why did you move to Runda? The main reason is security. You can walk around anytime without your valuables being stolen”, the chairman of the residents association noted.

The residents also accused Nairobi County officials of issuing construction permits without consulting the community.

They demanded that the county government revoke the approvals and halt the development, citing lack of transparency and public participation.

Karura Ward Representative Kamau Fiunifiu joined the protest, vowing to oppose any illegal land acquisition in Runda — particularly on riparian zones adjacent to rivers and wetlands.

He warned that such developments could worsen flooding during rainy seasons, a recurring problem in the area.

“I’m giving you my personal commitment as your leader that I will support you. The best people to protect this community are you, because you live here,” he said.

“We have a Runda Basin here. If this development is allowed to continue, we will face serious ecological issues — and that’s why we are saying no,” he warned.

“We are insisting that the plans must and if they will not heed our voices we will stop it”, the MCA vowed.

The residents further threatened legal action against officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and Nairobi County, whom they accuse of facilitating the alleged land grab.

They insist the land must remain a green space for the benefit of the community and future generations.
