The Nairobi County Government has launched the installation
of large, user-friendly dustbins across the Central Business District (CBD),
marking a renewed commitment to keeping the capital city clean.
Green Nairobi CEC Maureen Njeri confirmed the initiative,
highlighting its importance following a coordinated clean-up exercise led by
the county’s Green Army under the Green Nairobi Department.
“Cleanliness is a collective responsibility. As the Green
Army continues with their commendable efforts, let’s also play our part by not
littering,” Njeri stated.
“We’re beginning this project in the CBD and will expand into residential estates in the next phase.”
The newly installed bins—sleek black containers branded with
the slogan “Let’s Make Nairobi Clean” and decorated in county colours—are
already visible along major streets and highways in the city centre.
Njeri noted that this effort is part of a broader plan to
establish Green Nairobi Limited, a county-owned company focused on sanitation
and environmental sustainability.
“This plan must succeed. I’ve said it before—we can have a
clean city,” she affirmed.
“With proper coordination, Green Nairobi will oversee cleanups, manage garbage collection, create jobs, and help us realise the city we all want to live and work in.”

Multiple installation teams have been dispatched to cover
designated streets, and the rollout is expected to continue over the coming
weeks.
Governor Johnson Sakaja has urged Nairobians to support the
initiative and take pride in maintaining a litter-free city.
“We’re calling on everyone to support this initiative by
using the bins and respecting the environment,” she said.
“Let’s back the Green Army and work together for a cleaner, greener Nairobi.”
Njeri also noted that the new dustbins are made of glass
fibre—a durable material chosen to deter vandalism.
Additionally, the county has entered into a waste-to-energy
agreement aimed at converting waste from the Dandora landfill into usable
energy, promoting sustainable waste management practices.
To reinforce the initiative, strict penalties will be
imposed on individuals and entities found dumping waste illegally.
