A nominated city MCA has tabled a motion to compel county administration to relocate liquor outlets that are located within 300 meters of learning institutions.
UDA-nominated lawmaker Nassra Nandha says she is concerned that children in most neighbourhoods in Nairobi are getting early exposure to alcohol, thereby irreparably denting their future.
If adopted by the house, she said, the alcohol licensing body in the capital will be compelled to deregister any outlet that does not relocate away from near learning institutions within 30 days.
The learning institutions in this context range from kindergarten to tertiary levels.
Citing a Nacada report, she said most children, especially in slums get hooked to drugs because of proximity to the outlets and the relaxed sale rules.
Nandha also wants supermarkets and stores to double efforts in ensuring the sale is not to underage buyers.
The efforts by the new lawmaker add to efforts by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai to have entertainment joints removed from residential areas to guarantee peaceful family environments.
Governor Johnson Sakaja had also promised during his maiden county assembly address that he will ensure the joints are relocated "to afford our children peaceful time to do homework and sleep".
