The Nairobi Expressway is a design masterpiece , the firm managing the road has said.

The accidents that have occurred at the Mlolongo exit are due to speeding motorists.

Moja Express Company on Thursday termed the trial run a success with over 30,000 vehicles using the 27km road daily.

The company spoke amid indications that President Uhuru Kenyatta may officially commission the road, one of his major legacy projects, next week.

A couple of accidents have occurred at the road's exit in Mlolongo over the last month.

However, Moja's public relations and media manager Jean Ong'iyo said such was a result of speeding motorists and had nothing to do with the highway design.

“To mitigate such crashes, we have put up rumble strips at the toll stations just before the exit so that it forces you to slow down,” Ong'iyo said.

She said the trial run allowed them to address concerns raised by motorists.

The company has put in place extra safety measures including reinforcement of the toll booths to protect staffers manning the road.

Last week, the Sh89 billion project was named the best Road Transport Infrastructure of the year during the Afrika Mashariki Transport Awards.

It beat the Ngong-Suswa road, the four bypasses, Standard Gauge Railway, Kenol-Marua road and the Nairobi Commuter Rail to the award.

The Nairobi Expressway is among several mega infrastructural projects in Kenya delivered by Chinese firms.

Ong'iyo said they expect to have more motorists using the road.

“We are surprised because we expected usage to pick up but this was not the pace we expected and that is why we have gone ahead to do ETC services so that more people use the road and they don't have to be stuck in traffic,” she said.

The Expressway was built to ease traffic congestion in the city and was expected to pick up over 30 per cent of traffic both on Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way.

The government has added more expressway registration points in strategic city locations to lure motorists to use the road.

Initially, motorists were required to visit the main service centre at Nairobi Expressway Plaza along Mombasa Road and fill in the Service Subscriber Registration Form.

However, last month, Moja Expressway Company announced various points where interested motorists can register.

Moja Expressway is a subsidiary of China Road and Bridge Corporation that built the elevated highway.

Ong'iyo said the road records the biggest usage on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The government has since banned matatus from using the road.

Transport CS James Macharia on Wednesday said the temporary ban remains in force and that police will impound public service vehicles found on the road.

“We have not allowed the matatus back and any matatu on the expressway will be pulled over by the police,” the CS told the Star.

The trial run was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta in May to enable the government to identify challenges and address them in good time.

The road has 11 tolling stations, 54 toll plazas, 54 cameras along the full stretch and another 126 cameras inside the toll plazas.

The road is monitored with recordings being done at 30 minutes intervals.

It has a smart monitoring system that detects congestion, spillage, vehicle reversals, pedestrian crossing and emergencies

The dual carriageway has 11 interchanges at Mlolongo, Standard Gauge Railway, JKIA, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, Westlands, and James Gichuru Road.

The expressway, with 18.2km on the ground and 8.9km elevated, is a class A, four-lane dual carriageway with a design speed of 80km per hour.
