Four family members from Ikanga/Kyatune in Kitui South subcounty who died in a road crash in Makueni on November 21 were laid to rest on Wednesday during an emotional ceremony at their home.
Tears flowed freely as mourners, relatives and local leaders watched the coffins of Jemimah Mbinya and her three children — Chris Musili (14), Caleb Musili (11) and Esther Musili (2) — lowered into a single grave.
The funeral was attended by Kitui South MP Rachael Nyamai and Kitui Chief Officer for Agriculture Gladys Kivoto.
The four died at Kasambuiya area along the Tawa–Ngoluni road when the driver of a lorry lost control and rammed into the matatu they were travelling in, killing six people.
Mbinya and her children had just picked Chris from school after he completed his KCSE examinations when tragedy struck. Two other young relatives survived with injuries.
MP Nyamai told mourners that President William Ruto had sent Sh800,000 to support the grieving family, while Kitui Governor Julius Malombe contributed Sh300,000.
Nyamai said a heavy cloud of sorrow had settled over Ikanga/Kyatune as the community came to terms with the loss.
“Losing four members of the same family is sad, unfortunate and unbearably painful for us. Our people have been thrown into mourning,” she said.
She expressed concern over the rising number of road fatalities and urged motorists to exercise caution, stop speeding and adhere to traffic rules.
The MP further called on National Transport and Safety Authority and the traffic department to intensify enforcement, especially during the Christmas and New Year festive period, when accidents typically increase.
