The Isiolo government on Wednesday launched a feeding programme for ECDE children.

Governor Abdi Hassan Guyo said the programme targets 164 ECDE centres. The food will last the children this second term only.

All 10 wards in the county-Oldonyiro, Merti, Garbatulla, Chari, Ngaremara,  Sericho, Wabera, Bulapesa, Garba Tula and Kinna-will benefit.

Some of the food items donated include rice, beans and cooking oil.

Speaking during the launch, Galgallo Ali the director ECDE hailed Governor Guyo for his efforts in ensuring that ECDE children are supported.

He said the feeding programme will significantly contribute to the retention and transition of the children to the primary level.

"I must laud our governor for providing these food items which will go a long way in ensuring access, retention, and completion in our ECDE, " Galgallo said.

The CEC did not say how much was spent on the programme.

The feeding programme is in line with Governor Guyo’s goal of ensuring  pupils in ECDEs are retained in school.

He said the provision of food will also improve child health and development, play and participation.

The governor said the programme will have a huge positive impact on literacy levels in the county.

Still in education, more than 15,000 students in Isiolo are set to benefit from bursary funds.

In March this year, Governor Guyo launched the county's bursary and scholarship programme worth Sh35 million for the targeted beneficiaries across the county.

Over the years, issues such as culture and drought have substantially contributed to a huge number of school dropouts in Isiolo.

As a result, the county requested school principals not to send children home for fees, reminding them that the drought has affected their parents' sources of income.
