Meru leaders want cops probed over MCA's killing

They called for more police reservists in the area bordering Isiolo county

Meru leaders have called for a probe on the police officers who were with former Antubetwe MCA George Kaliunga when he was shot dead by bandits in Isiolo county.

Kaliunga was shot in Kinna, Isiolo county, while in the company of Meru police officers on April 30. They were following up on his 71 goats that had been stolen.

The leaders spoke during a requiem mass for Kaliunga at Theera Primary School in Igembe North on Saturday.

Led by former Governor Peter Munya and Tigania East MP Mpuru Aburi they said the cops should be probed because people can't understand how the ward rep was killed in their presence.

Mutuati police boss William Letting said they were ambushed by the bandits.

"We were ambushed as we pursued them. Kaliunga was shot because he was in front of us," he said.

But Munya accused the cops of not being interested in finding justice for Kaliunga.

"Some who witnessed the happenings were told to write reports they did not even bother to do so and nobody questioned them," Munya said.

The police boss said the bandits took off after a brief exchange as they rushed the former MCA to the hospital

Aburi said more police reservists should be deployed in Meru to tame banditry and cattle rustling.

He said the explanation given wasn't satisfactory and as such, the police who had accompanied Kaliunga should be investigated.

Igembe Central MP Dan Kiili called for more police reservists in the area bordering Isiolo county.

Meru Woman Rep Elizabeth Kailemia said that they are tired of killings related to cattle rustling in the Meru-Isiolo border.

Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu said that those who are behind Kaliunga should death should be arrested and the anti-stock theft post should be put up in Lororo.

Former Igembe North MP Maoka Maore said the same operation that is conducted in North Rift should be applied in Upper Eastern.

"Kitui, Wajir and Tharaka Nithi counties that neighbour Isiolo county are complaining because their livestock is stolen by cattle rustlers from Isiolo," he said.

He said cattle rustlers should be given a taste of their own medicine.

Meru Deputy Governor Mutuma M'ithinkia said Interior CS Kithure  Kindiki should replicate the operations that are happening in North Rift In Meru and Isiolo counties to tame bandits.

"We cannot continue seeing our livestock stolen and our people being killed," the deputy governor said.

Kaliunga's sister said that it is not enough to transfer the police officers who were present when the former MCA was killed.

"Those who were involved should be arrested and prosecuted," she said.
