Malombe defends MCAs over halting CEC nominees vetting

Says they had acted within the the law.

Governor Julius Malombe on Tuesday absolved MCAs of any blame for halting the vetting of his 10 CEC nominees.

Malombe said it was wrong for anyone to blame the speaker of the assembly or the MCA as they had acted within the the law.

The governor sought to dispel claims by some of Kitui leaders that the assembly maliciously halted the vetting.

He said he was aware that the exrcise was paused after EACC direced all county assemblies to ensure all CEC nominees are first cleared by the anti-graft agency.

Addressing the press in his office, the governor said people should not read malice in the assembly’s decision. He expressed optimism that the exercise would resume this week

“On November 18, all the county assembly speakers across the country received a letter from EACC requesting them not to proceed with vetting of CECs, chief officers and public service board members to necessitate due integrity checks,” he said

The county assembly of Kitui last week surprised many when they cancelled the vetting and subsequent approval of CEC nominees that was to take place on Thursday and Friday last week.
