CLERICS CONDEMN VIOLENCE

Imenti youth leader 'stabbed' after clash on BBI proposals

MCA says man stage managed the attack to play victim and conning his sponsors

In Summary

Imenti South police boss William Maronga said he was not aware of any attack reported by the two youth leaders.

Clerics in South Imenti have condemned an attack on two youth leaders from the region following their stance on whether the constituency should be split or not.

Kirimi Sesmo Okampo and Simon Kinyua were on Saturday night attacked, beaten and stabbed by eight assailants.

Okampo suffered stab wounds on the stomach and the right arm.

He is the Imenti Youth Caucus chairman while Kinyua is the patron. Both have rejected attempts to have Imenti South constituency split into two.

The BBI has proposed an additional 70 constituencies with two of them allocated to Meru county. Should Kenyans approve the proposals at the referendum, then Meru will get two more constituencies.

That possibility has generated discussion among residents on Imenti South on whether it gets split or not.

Imenti South is one of the biggest constituencies in Meru county. Both Okampo and Kinyua are against attempts to have the constituency split.

The two addressed reporters at Igoji market on their opposition to the attempts to split the electoral area hours before they were attacked.

Okampo told the Star he had reported the matter to Igoji police station, but no action had been taken. He said eight people attacked him, beat him up and stabbed him on the left hand and abdomen.

The youth leader blamed area MCA John Kireria and Meru chief of staff Gideon Kimathi whom he accused of hiring goons to attack him.

Both Kireria and Kimathi have denied involvement.

Kireria denied having any communication with Kimathi for the last five days leading to his attack.

The MCA said the youth leader had stage-managed the attack.

“Okampo should not think the Star is a media house that airs malice based on allegations without proof. Let him give you the OB and tell you the hospital where he was treated at because he became rowdy after refusing to pay a bill after a drinking spree. Their sponsors are failing him," Kireria said.

"Okampo had promised to hold a meeting of more than 100 people but it lacked such crowd and so out of frustration, he went on a drinking spree and was arrested at about 11:45pm in a bar," Kireria said.

Kimathi said, “I am not aware of such incidences and this are very serious allegations touching my character. Let them do a formal complaint so that police can conduct investigations and I clear my name.”

Imenti South police boss William Maronga said he was not aware of any attack reported by the two youth leaders.

Okampo claimed his life was in danger adding that the attackers stole his mobile phone Sh80,000 and another Sh18,000 in cash.

Reverend Gideon Muthuri of EAPC churches appealed for civility and sobriety in debating the division of the constituency.

“We are shocked and we condemn the violence, force or intimidations meted on others to create fear. No boundary will be marked out on wrangles but best opinion and the ancestral traditions and according to the will of the people,” Muthuri said.

Kireria said Okampo was seeking sympathy votes through his name. He said the man had not even reported the attack as he claimed.

"If he was attacked, I am ready to lead demos until perpetrators are apprehended," the MCA said.
