Women's champions Nairobi Water Queens coach Jack Ochieng is happy with his team's build-up towards next month’s defence of their East and Central Africa Club Championships title in Nairobi.

The Water Queens, who are both the national and regional champions, easily won their two league matches at the Nyayo Stadium over the weekend, a feat that put a huge smile on Ochieng’s face.

“The two wins were a nice build-up towards the championship. Our training is in top gear now and the team spirit is sky-high ahead of the regional games,” noted the veteran tactician.

The East and Central Africa Handball Club Championship (ECAHF) slated for mid-next month has already attracted teams from Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of  Congo, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan, and Zanzibar.

Gaudencia Lubasi (four) and Lucy Khamala (three) were the top scorers for the 10th-placed Stars, who have just one win in seven attempts.

On Saturday, the champions had a 42-16 triumph over Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) to move to the top of the table with a maximum of 16 points from eight matches.

National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) and Ulinzi Sharks are second and third respectively with 14 points each.

In another game, Kenyatta University had 11 goals from Rio Ochieng as they just did enough to pip the visiting Trans Nzoia 25-24 in a closely fought encounter.

The Kitale-based side, who won two and drew one of their four matches in their tour of the capital, had five goals a-piece from Kevin Wasike and Emmanuel Wabule.
