Over 15 counties are set to face off at the Kenya Amputee Football national trials to be held this week at Eldoret National Polytechnic ahead of the All Africa Para Games set for Accra, Ghana, in September.
Uasin Gishu branch chairman Geoffrey Okoth they want to play their hearts out to win the national title to give his players considerable control of the national team.
“We want to use home advantage to ensure that we win the title and get a lion’s share, at least six slots, in the national team,” said Okoth.
A total of 14 teams have registered for the national trials that kick off on Tuesday through Friday.
Hosts Uasin Gishu will lead the park with Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Kakamega, Siaya, Kisumu, Bomet, Nakuru, Narok, Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Machakos and Thika also enlisted.
“These will be the most competitive trials where at least 25 players will be selected to fly the Kenyan flag in Ghana. We qualified for the games in Tanzania last year,” said Okoth.
Kenya finished sixth at the Cecafa Amputee World Cup qualifiers in Tanzania after losing to Morocco in their final qualifying match.
“We missed the World Cup but managed to qualify for Africa Para Games,” explained Okoth, who also serves as Team Kenya doctor.
