FELGONAH: Churchgoers, spare us the hypocrisy

A lot of evil has been done in the name of God. It often starts with the things that look insignificant.

In Summary

  • I really do not have a problem with people doing what they want.
  • I have a problem with people claiming one thing, doing another, then judging you for not doing what they should be doing.

A man will take you out on a date, using money he stole or got through some dubious activities. (You will know because he will brag about how he got it. Especially if he is from my county and surrounding areas). Tell you how he does not like his boss and wishes him dead.

On your date, his mother will call. He will not answer her call. Instead, he will send a text message telling her that he is in a very important meeting. Then turn and tell you that she probably just wants money and cannot understand why she did not save when she was younger.

He will swear on God that a certain person sells drugs and kills people. Meanwhile, the person is not even his acquaintance. You will drink and eat to your fill. You then decide to look for somewhere quiet to ‘rest'.

Maybe you are someone’s wife. Maybe he is someone’s husband (remember my promiscuous or polygamous article?) Maybe you are two single people who are not joined together in holy matrimony.

The resting will have nothing missionary about it. His parts will find their way to your mouth and he will drink from your cup.

While laying down and basking in the afterglow, this son of Adam will unashamedly ask you which church you attend! Now dare you say you do not go to church or you are not a Christian. That is where he draws the line. This lamb of God will sit up, naked as his creator had intended for him to be in the garden of Eden and tell you that you risk going to hell. Hell.

He will quote a few verses and offer to invite you to his church. The confusion is great because you can count how many commandments he broke in the few hours you were together. “I see it is on me to bring you back to the church”. His parting shot for the night before he proceeds to send you prayers and devotions every morning.

Politicians will say anything, do anything to get into office. Steal from public coffers and generally cause a lot of unrest. Then they will stand before a crowd, pay a “man” of God to declare that they are the “chosen” ones.

People like these make me believe that the gods of organised religion are either powerless or non-existent. How can you just sit back and watch people make a joke of you? Things that you apparently made.

Anyway, my point is this. If you are going to be about something, be about it. Pick a struggle. Because who are you fooling?

A friend said to me once that if a person claimed to be religious or born again at a job interview, he would not hire them. I have come to understand this principle, by and by. These ones who must announce are usually the worst humans. Who think because they go to church or mosque they are far better humans and are somehow exempt from a perceived hell. They are often gossipers, thieves, backstabbers even murderers. But they are not worried, they go to the house of God.

Listen, I really do not have a problem with people doing what they want. I have a problem with people claiming one thing, doing another, then judging you for not doing what they should be doing. A lot of evil has been done in the name of God. It often starts with the things that look insignificant. If you cannot be faithful with little things, the saying goes... It will not be hard for you to justify killing in the name of the Lord.

So this is to the people who have been trying to bring some of us to the Lord, or back to the church or to the fold. We see the way you are living and you have convinced us that the decision we made was actually a very good one. I, for one, am willing to float around with my ancestors when I die and avenge the wrongdoings to my lineage (I have a list) than live hypocritically while I am alive.

I know someone is probably thinking the commandments are in the Old Testament and they are living in the new dispensation. Well, your Bible says that Jesus did not come to do away with the commandments, but to summarise them. Love your God with all your heart. Love your neighbour as you love yourself. Nothing could describe a Christian less.
