A pedestrian died Monday evening while two others were injured after they were hit by a speeding car in Limuru town, Kiambu county.

The surviors sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Limuru Nursing Home where they are receiving treatment.

Area subcounty police commander Mary Njoki said the car was going downhill near Kirathimo Social Hall where it hit three people who were walking together and killed one of them.

Speaking in a phone interview with the Star on Monday, the police boss cautioned motorists from speeding during the rainy season.

"It's too bad that the car hit the pedestrians, killing one of them on the spot," she said.

"Everyone needs to be very observant and especially drivers since when the rains start, waters cover all markings on the road" she said.

Njoki said during this wet weather, a lot of vehicles have been skidding when drivers apply instant breaks and when negotiating corners and this result in accidents.

"We are calling on all our drivers to drive at a moderate speed which one can control their vehicle in case anything unusual happens while driving," she said.

The wreckage of the car was towed to Tigoni police station for inspection as investigations continue.

The body of the deceased was taken to Tigoni Hospital mortuary.

Njoki said three other people who were Sunday evening injured in another accident at Murengeti along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway are recovering.

Njoki said the accident happened when a Toyota Hiace matatu collided with a Toyota Noah.

The accident caused a huge traffic jam forcing traffic police officers to work tirelessly to clear the backlog of vehicles.

"We need to be patient. The problem with us is to pretend to know much. We want to use shortcuts and overlap others. In the process, we cause traffic jam," motirist James Amboka said.

Njoki further advised motorists to be careful while using the Nairobi-Nakuru highway especially along the stretch at Rironi, Kamandura, Kwambira, Ngarariga, Murengeti and beyond, since the are is covered by fog during the rainy season.

"The fog covers the distance the driver is supposed to see while driving. We need not be in a hurry, one should take time at all times," the subcounty commander said.

President William Ruto has since raised concern about the risiong cases of fatal road accidents and directed the Ministry of Transport to crack the whip and minimise road carnage.

Ruto asked Police IG Japhet Koome to partner with NTSA to arrest the runaway road accidents and reduce fatalities.
