Two airport employees and an officer based at the Wilson Airport have been lauded for returning a bag that contained Sh2.4 million, phones and an iPad to its owners.

According to Citizen TV, the bag belonged to tourists from the United Kingdom and had been left at the airport.

The three were identified as security supervisors at the baggage collection area Joseph Kabangi, security staff Martin Kamau and officer Brajeliner Fikiri.

"I can remember it was early last month, there were passengers who were transferring their bags from their trolley to the tourist van and one of them somehow forgot his bag… It was a small brown bag," Kabangi said.

The three said they took the bag for screening for security purposes, finding money in dollars and shillings, phones, cards and an iPad.

"We contacted him and he found us in the office. He identified the bag as his. If he had not turned up that day, we would have booked it in the OB and then we keep it in our safe custody," Kabangi added.

He said it was not usual for travellers to leave their items at the airport.

The forgotten luggage is stored for at least 90 days before it is handed over to the Kenya Revenue Authority.

"Integrity is our core value, it is our business. I assure them that they will always get their items back," he said.

Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) said the good Samaritans will be rewarded for their integrity.

It said the gesture affirmed that Kenya was a great choice for tourism.

The authority also said it is in the process of procuring CCTV cameras to enhance security at the facility.

Wilson Airport does not have any official CCTV cameras to monitor the day-to-day activities.

Regional Airport Manager Joseph Okumu said the security cameras procurement process has been unresponsive.

"But right now, the process is under procurement, and we expect that by end of this year, the CCTV will be up and about so this airport will be covered by CCTV systems," he said.

"Those officers who were responsible for keeping this money will be commended."
