Eswatini PM denies King Mswati III fled country

Government said it will update the nation of the ongoing situation.

Eswatini is the last country in Africa with an absolute monarchy.

Acting Prime Minister of the Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) government has rubbished claims that King Mswati III fled the country on Monday following ongoing protests calling for reforms.

In a statement on Tuesday, Themba Masuku assured emaSwati and the international community that King Mswati III is in the country and was busy working on the goals of his government.

“I would like to this opportunity to assure emaSwati and the international community that his Majesty King Mswati III is in the country and continues to lead in working with the government to advance the kingdom’s goals.”

He added that the government will update the nation on the ongoing situation as the day progresses.

“In the meantime, we appeal for calm, restraint and peace from all emaSwati.”

Earlier on, South African state broadcaster SABC had reported that King Mswati might have fled.

On Tuesday, BBC reported that security clashed with protesters who are demanding for a major constitutional amendment.
