MORE than 4,000 members of a sacco in Bungoma that owns a tourist hotel have criticised their leaders’ decision to lease it to Bonito Properties.

The Bungoma Teachers Housing and Investment Cooperative Society members now want the hotel sold.

“The teachers who invested in this property are dying every day without reaping from their sweat,” member Victor Kakenyi said.

He was speaking during the annual delegates meeting at the hotel in Bungoma town.

The teachers said they have not received any dividends since the early 1970s.

“It would be prudent to sell this property and divide the proceeds amongst ourselves instead of leasing it for a long time,” Godfrey Barasa said.

Bonito director Wycliffe Wangamati said he has not bought the property.

He said he has only leased it to improve the ailing hotel industry in Bungoma.

“I’m a genuine investor. My job is to do business, pay rent and dividends annually so we can all benefit,” Wangamati said.

The director said he has invested more than Sh140 million to revive the hotel and put up other facilities to improve business.
