Onyancha, Asumwa lead Kenya's charge in ITF U-18 tourney

In the girls category, Rosehilda Asumwa, will lead the Kenyan charge and she is confident of delivering

Derrick Onyancha has set his sights on winning a leg of the ITF Under-18 tournament starting today at Nairobi Club.

The tournament, will be played for three consecutive weeks with the first tournament starting today and concluding this weekend. The second leg is planned to start on November 1 with the final one scheduled for November 8. 

Onyancha will be up against some of the top juniors in the world including players from India, Austria, Japan and Switzerland, Canada and Sweden among others.

He exuded confidence that he is up to the challenge of competing despite the top class field he is facing. 

“I have trained well and I looking forward to the event and being competitive against some of the best players. Playing at home will be an added advantage for me,” he added. 

In the girls category, Rosehilda Asumwa, the younger sister of  high flying Angela Okutoyi, will lead the Kenyan charge and she is confident of delivering in all the three tournaments.

"I played a couple of build up tournaments this year and I am looking forward to playing against the best in the world,” added Asumwa. Cynthia Cheruto and Alicia Owegi are the other players to look out for in the category.

Tennis Kenya (TK) administrator, Nancy Nduku, said preparations for the three legs are complete with all Covid-19 protocols being followed.

“We are delighted to host the tournaments and we are looking forward to competitive three weeks. We  hope our Kenyan players can deliver good results and at the very least win a leg of the circuit,” added Nduku.
