Kenya Sevens will embark on a one-week training camp in Nakuru as they intensify preparations for the World Seven Series leg in Perth, Australia, later this month.
The camp will take place at the Menengai Oilers’ training facility starting Monday where the team will look at building momentum from their performance in the second leg of the series in Cape Town, South Africa, in December, where they finished seventh.
Speaking Sunday, team manager Steve Sewe said the players are in high spirits as they build up for the trip to Western Australia.
“We have had some good sessions before Christmas and New Year break and are looking at strengthening the various facets of play to ensure we reach the quarterfinals in Perth and subsequent tournaments,” Sewe said.
Shujaa are ninth on the log with 11 points and Sewe believes they are on the right trajectory after an impressive display in Cape Town.
“From the first tournament, you can see the boys have matured and adapted to the rigours of elite Sevens rugby. We aim for consistency as we target the quarterfinals of every leg of the series,” added Sewe.
Assistant coach Louis Kisia said they are keen to improve kick-of reception — “currently operating at 60 per cent”.
“The Kickoff reception is so vital in Sevens rugby. We need to win our ball and the opposition ball too. It’s something we are working on as we hope to operate at 90-100 per cent,” Kisia said.
They will make minimum changes to the side with the majority of the players involved in the opening leg in Dubai and Cape Town expected to retain their places.
Contrary to earlier reports indicating that John Okoth(Tibia ) and Brian Tanga (wrist) were likely to be available for the Vancouver leg next month, reports however indicate they will not be ready to play.
