Africa Cup Sevens slated for later this month in Mauritius in Shujaa's next stop after returning to the Worlds Seven Series

Head coach Kevin Wambua said they will rest for the next 10 days before resuming preparations for the continental event.

“The Africa event is a good championship to test our depth and give fringe players a chance to show their worth. We will retain some of the players who played in Madrid and include some of the members of the squad,” said Wambua on arrival from Madrid on Tuesday.

He said they will immediately shift their focus to the Olympics after the continental event, where Shujaa will be playing for the third consecutive time after gracing the 2016 event in Rio and 2020 in Tokyo.

"The Olympics will be a good platform. where we hope to meet some of the top sides around the world. It will be a good indicator of where we are as a unit,” added Wambua.

He said the best is yet to come from his charges and with a National Sevens Circuit set to start in July, he believes more talent can be fused in the squad.

"I believe the boys will get better. We are not the complete team yet but we have taken significant steps in the last year, culminating in us qualifying for the Olympics and getting back our core status over the weekend," observed Wambua.

The coach said they will start thinking of the World Sevens Series once they complete the Olympics in Paris in August.

“We have two big tournaments coming up and once we are done with the Olympics, our attention will switch to the Sevens Series in December," he noted.

Co-Captain Vincent Onyala thanked the Kenyan fans who turned up in Madrid for their support and those at home.

“The support we received, calls and messages were immense for the team and we dedicate the victory to them," said Onyala.

Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum said the government will continue to support the team but did not give specific figures.

" They have done the country proud and we will continue supporting them in their upcoming tournaments.

The team then embarked on a road show around the city sponsored by the Ministry of Sports.
