The Kenya U-20 team heads to residential camp this week at Peponi School in Thika as they ramp up preparations for the World Championship in Scotland in July.

Coach Simon Jawichre said upcountry players will be hosted in Nakuru, Kisumu and Kakamega while those based in the city will train at Peponi.

"We start our camp next week and we only have three weeks to prepare for the World Cup. The training facility at Peponi is ideal and the boys in Nairobi are looking forward to it” said Jawichre

The Catholic Monks' coach expressed delight that some of his charges played in the just concluded Super Series tournament and are in good shape.

"We had a couple of our players playing in the Super Series and I believe they played exceptionally well. This augurs well for the team ahead of the tournament in Scotland,” noted Jawichre.

Jawichre said kicking and the lineout are two key areas the team will have to work on during the training camps.

“From our analysis in Zimbabwe, we struggled in those facets of play and we will try to work on those areas ahead of the event," he added.

He was non-committal on whether they will play build-up matches, especially with the 15 season having concluded last week with the Enterprise Cup final.

“We will see the teams that are going to be available for us to play and hopefully, we get a game or two to test our strategy."

Kenya face a stern test in the World Under 20 Championship, where they face Uruguay, Netherlands and USA or Canada in Pool B.

The side, known as Chipu,  qualified for the world event after beating hosts Zimbabwe 28-13 in the final in Harare in April.

This will be the fourth time the country is playing at the World event, having played in 2009, 2019 and 2023.
