Kenya will bid to host a leg of the World Sevens Series in 2026, Kenya Rugby Union chairman Alexander Mutai has revealed.
Speaking on Wednesday, Mutai said they have had preliminary discussions with World Rugby on the suitability of hosting a leg of the series in three years.
“I had a meeting with World Rugby last week on the sidelines of the Rugby World Cup final in France and we explored ways of hosting a tournament of the series,” said Mutai.
For this to happen, he said, the country will have to ensure a timely conclusion to the construction of a rugby stadium as promised by the government.
"This partnership between us, the Ministry of Sports and the private sector is something we are very keen on," said Mutai.
"We are looking at having the stadium ready for use by 2026. There is adequate land for a world-class facility in Nairobi."
In addition, Kenya will have to be a core team in the World Sevens Series and Mutai remains optimistic about Shujaa's chances of reclaiming their status next year.
"The boys have qualified for next year's Olympic Games in Paris, France but we are not resting on our laurels since we have to prepare for the Safari Sevens and next year's Challenger Series,” added Mutai.
Meanwhile, Kenya Breweries have pumped Sh15m to KRU in preparations for this Saturday's Elgon Cup clash against Uganda in Kisumu and the Safari Sevens tournament slated for November 17-19 at the RFUEA grounds.
During the cheque handover at EABL offices in Ruaraka, KBL managing director Mark Ocitti, said: "We are delighted to announce this sponsorship to the Kenya Rugby Union to support the upcoming Elgon Cup and the Safari Sevens tournaments."
Mutai acknowledged Tusker's continued support for the sport, saying: "Tusker has been a steadfast partner, standing by Kenyan rugby in various capacities for many years. We are forever grateful for their continued support."
