Strathmore Leos will use this weekend's Embu Sevens to test various combinations in preparation for the upcoming season.

Coach Luis Kisia said the Leos head to Embu seeking to defend their title as well as test their depth ahead of the national Sevens circuit kick off next month.

"We have had eight weeks of training and now we want to test our systems and strategies and see where we are in terms of performance,” said Kisia.

Kisia said they will field two teams during the two-day tournament.

"We are fielding two very strong teams. The tournament will serve as trials to identify our team for the national series," noted Kisia.

However, Kisia was coy about their chances to retain the title they won last year after beating Oilers 19-12.

He said: "A win will be very good but we have to look at the bigger picture. It's all about getting physically and mentally prepared for the national sevens circuit."

Kisia cited Mwamba, Oilers, KCB and Quins as some of the teams to watch in the Sevens series.

"Mwamba could be the biggest threat. They have recruited well and have brought in a club legend, Collins Injera, to the technical bench which makes them a team to watch," observed Kisia.

The Madaraka-based side headline Pool 'A' where they face Meru RFC, Kabrak University and Kabete Stallions.

"This being the first tournament we will take it one match at a time," said Kisia, adding that the pool is quite tricky.

Strathmore's second side, Catullus, are in Pool 'D' where they face Nakuru RFC, Embu RFC and Presybeterian University.

Menengai Oilers have sent their second string squad to Meru where they face Catholic Monks, Administration Police and Chuka Vikings in Pool 'E'.

Pool 'B' features Homeboyz, Kirinyaga Stallions, Northern Suburbs and NYS Spades.

Nondies headline Pool 'C' where they meet Masinde Muliro University, Rongai Morans and Mwea Eagles.

The five group winners and the three best second-place finishers will qualify for the quarterfinals.
