FIFA referee Omar Artan has set his sights on officiating at the 2030 FIFA World Cup after missing out on this year's tournament, saying he remains determined to return stronger despite the setback.
The Somali-born official, who was unable to officiate at the 2026 World Cup after being denied a visa, said the disappointment has only strengthened his resolve to continue performing at the highest level of international football.
Artan was speaking in Nairobi during a meet-and-greet reception at BBS Mall in Eastleigh, where he received a hero's welcome from members of the Somali community, football stakeholders and government leaders in recognition of his achievements in the game.
The event, organised by telecommunications firm Somtel, which signed Artan as a brand ambassador ahead of the 2026 World Cup, celebrated the referee's rise to become one of Africa's most respected match officials.
Reflecting on his journey, Artan said Kenya has become a second home because of the close working relationship he has built with Kenyan match officials over the years.
"For me, it's fantastic, especially football in Kenya. I have always worked with Kenyan assistant referees over the last three or four years, and now I feel like I am at home," said Artan.
Among those who attended the reception were Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi.
Duale expressed confidence that Artan's World Cup dream remains alive despite the disappointment of missing the 2026 tournament.
"There was a small turbulence, but I am sure, Inshallah, at the next FIFA World Cup in Morocco, Portugal and Spain, Omar will be there. Africa will be proud, Kenya will be proud and Somalia will be proud," said Duale.
Artan's achievements continue to earn admiration across the region. He was named the Confederation of African Football's Men's Referee of the Year in 2025, becoming one of the continent's most celebrated officials.
The reception drew hundreds of community members, business leaders, youth and football enthusiasts, many describing Artan as an inspiration to aspiring referees and sportsmen across East Africa.
As he looks ahead to the next World Cup cycle, Artan said he remains committed to maintaining the standards that have established him among Africa's elite referees while continuing to inspire the next generation of match officials.
