The rugby,
hockey, and basketball regional champions beat Agai Mixed Secondary 1-0 to win a first county title in 13
years.
Grade 10
student Ferouz Oyondi grabbed the vital goal for the Equator Boys against Agai
in the final that was played at Chavakali High School.
Both teams,
however, progressed to the regional championships to be held at Homa Bay School
from July 7 to 11.
Oyondi also
scored the lone goal in the semi-final against Onjiko School. Agai advanced to
the final after a 1-0 win against Kisumu Boys.
Maseno School’s Director of Sports Caleb Olang’o said the win was not by fluke.
“This is a
project we have been working on for the last three. There has been heavy
investment in this team, and it has borne fruit. Most of the players are in Grade
10,” said Olang’o.
“Maseno
School continue to nurture talent in all disciplines and we are keen to
dominate the Nyanza championships.”
“We have played most
of the teams that have qualified, and we are confident we shall lift the title.
We have already beaten the regional champions,” he remarked.
The school last
year partnered with the Michael Olunga Foundation Academy, who sent 18
Grade 10 students to the institution.
Maseno School,
under the leadership of Chief Principal Peter Otieno, also won a rare boys’ volleyball title after beating former champions Onjiko School 3-2
in a five-set thriller.
Reflecting on the rare county titles in football and volleyball, Olang’o said: “We changed our mentality, and we are now doing things differently. Our basketball, hockey, and rugby teams were at the regionals in the first term. We expect them to do much better next year,. We want to reclaim our lost glory regionally and nationally.”
Maseno School is a former national and Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) basketball and rugby champion.
