Gor Mahia will battle to the very end in their Kenyan Premier League title defence, interim head coach Zedekiah "Zico" Otieno has said.

The 21-time Kenyan champions find themselves at a critical juncture, grappling with the challenges of an underwhelming campaign while clinging to the hope of a title that seems tantalizingly out of reach.

Zico has been tasked with guiding the record champions in their three final fixtures of the season against Ulinzi Stars, AFC Leopards and Kenya Police FC.

This comes after head coach Sinisa Mihic was shown the door on Monday following a string of disappointing results.

Zico, a former defender at the club, steps into the role with a profound understanding of Gor Mahia’s ethos.

His previous stint as interim manager, which lasted from November 2024 to February 2025, showcased his ability to galvanise the team, and now, he aims to replicate that success in the final three fixtures of the season.

With Michael Nam as his deputy, Zico recognises the weight of expectations resting on their shoulders.

"Our immediate task is to find effective ways of delivering the title. There are talks out there that we let the trophy slip through our fingers, but I strongly feel differently. We still stand a chance depending on how the next few matches unfold," Otieno said.

"We have our fingers crossed.  We are all determined to play continental football next season by all means."

The remaining matches represent a battleground where their essence will be tested. Currently trailing Police FC by seven points, the path to the KPL title appears to be just another mirage.

The context of their struggles cannot be overlooked. With only two victories in their last five matches and a disappointing draw against Murang'a Seal, their confidence is wanting.

The recent loss to Nairobi City Stars, a relegation-threatened side, was particularly damaging, serving as a wake-up call to players and supporters. Yet, in adversity lies opportunity.

Zico called for unity and a collective fight to help them prevail against the odds.

"Gor Mahia's legacy is one steeped in triumphs, with 21 KPL titles. As we approach the end of the season, the players are aware of the responsibility they carry, not just to themselves, but to the legion of fans who have stood by them through thick and thin," he said.

Nonetheless, Zico has urged his players to channel their frustrations from recent defeats into a renewed sense of purpose.

"Losing matches is not the end of the world. We must fight on and make good use of the important lessons that our losses have taught us. Gor Mahia is a big club and we must try to reflect this on the pitch," he said.

The recent dismissal of Mihic marks yet another chapter in Gor Mahia's tumultuous season.

Mihic's three-month tenure was marred by inconsistent performances and a rift between him and the players.

The Croatian tactician, who recorded eight victories in his 15 matches, struggled to maintain harmony within the squad.

He is the second coach to leave this season after Brazilian Leonardo Neiva was sacked on November 13, 2024.
