Nzoia Sugar head coach Mike Muiruri expects his team to make a hasty return to the Kenyan Premier League after just a season.

The club are already headed for the National Super League even though the current KPL season has three rounds to go.

The Millers are bottom of the standings with 19 points from 31 matches. They face Ulinzi Stars (June 16), Muhoroni Youth (June 19) and Sofaapaka (June 23) in their remaining matches.

Muiruri said that they have accepted their situation and has shifted his focus on preparing for life in the second, where he hopes to stay for just a season.

Speaking after beating AFC Leopards 2-1 in the Madaraka Day Cup encounter at the Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, Bungoma County, Muiruri said: “Today’s results are pleasing and the boys are ready.”

“We have improved greatly since I joined the team. We are fielding a young team, who are good in all departments.”

He expects to finish the KPL season strongly.

“We have accepted that we are heading to the National Super League. We want to make sure that we return to the top tier as fast as possible. We hope to play only one season in the NSL,” he said.

“We are building some young players, most of whom are secondary school students. We are building a team with enough depth to conquer the NSL and ensure we are competitive upon return to the KPL,” added Muiruri.

He was happy with how his players executed their game plan in beating Leopards, giving their fans Madaraka Day smiles.

After coming from a goal down to win the encounter, he said: “It was difficult to play in the rain. I had to change tactics in the second. I am glad it worked.”
