Kakamega governor Fernandez Barasa has expressed optimism that Bukhungu Stadium will host the CHAN competitions in September this year in its complete status.

Barasa said due to his close working relationship with President William Ruto, the county has secured Sh1 billion from the national government to complete the 30,000-seater stadium. 

“Because I cooperate with President William Ruto, he has ruled that  Bukhungu Stadium must host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) competitions this year," he noted. 

He added: "We have already had a meeting with the Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and he has assured us that the national government is going to give us the funds to complete the construction of Bukhungu Stadium,” he said

Ababu also added that Bukhungu Stadium is part of their plans as the country prepares to host the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) in 2027.

“All this is because we collaborate with the national government," he insisted.
