A mob torched a car that was ferrying livestock suspected to have been stolen on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
During the incident near Maguna centre, two suspects managed to flee before the car was reduced to ashes.
In the last couple of weeks, cases of livestock theft in parts of Naivasha have risen, with the suspects using personal cars to ferry the animals.
Earlier in the year, residents of Mirera on the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road torched another car, which was found ferrying sheep and goats suspected to have been stolen.
In the latest incident, the occupants of the car had allegedly stolen eight sheep that were feeding by the roadside.
Naivasha police boss Benjamin Boen said a member of the public saw the incident and alerted his neighbours as the car was driven off from the scene.
He said residents gave a chase using motorcycles and when they caught up with the alleged thieves, the occupants of the personal car fled after realising that they had been cornered.
“Members of the public after recovering some of the stolen livestock decided to torch the car and we are looking for the owner as part of our investigations,” he said.
Meanwhile, the number of motorcycle operators who have died through road accidents in Naivasha continued to rise, with careless overtaking and speeding blamed for most of the cases.
This was after another operator was hit and killed by a trailer along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road while overtaking a fleet of cars.
Witness Amos Mbuthia said the deceased had joined the road from Karagita estate when he was hit by the trailer as he sped off towards Naivasha town.
“The operator was to blame after overtaking a fleet of vehicles without checking. He died on the spot,” he said.
The OCPD said an inquest file had been opened and the body taken to the mortuary awaiting identification.
