Starlets beat Cameroon to proceed to next stage of WAFCON qualifiers

Starlets will now face either Gabon or Botswana in the second round of qualifiers.

Harambee starlets on Tuesday beat Cameroon 4-3 on penalties in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers played at the Nyayo National Stadium to proceed to the second stage of qualifiers.

Starlets got the first goal of the match from Cynthia Shilwatso following a cleverly taken freekick. They kept mounting the pressure on the Indomitable Lionesses.

The match however ended in a 1-0 win to Kenya but the game had to go to penalties owing to the aggregate of 1-1 after Starlets' loss in the first leg.

Starlets had lost to Cameroon 1-0 in the first leg played at the Reunification Stadium in Douala, Cameroon on September 22.

The Indomitable Lionesses were the first to take penalties converting it, Starlet captain, Ruth Ingosi, stepped up to take Starlet's first spot kick but had it saved.

Starlets however got their composure back by netting the other preceding spot kicks with Sheryl Angachi taking the last decisive penalty to send the team into the second stage of the qualifiers.

Starlets will now face either Gabon or Botswana in the second round of qualifiers.

The victor of the second round will secure an automatic qualification for the 2024 WAFCON tournament to be held in Morocco.

Harambee starlets second round match will take place between November 27 and December 5.
